KURDISTAN System of Health Monitoring and Surveillance
I-PRO IN KURDISTAN AUTONOMOUS REGION OF IRAQ - KRG-HIS PROJECT
By an international initiative funded by the Kurdistan Regional Government and by the Italian Cooperation Agency, the Pilot Project aims at setting up a system of health monitoring and surveillance in Kurdistan. It started on June 2015 , under the coordination of University of Tor Vergata and with the involvement of Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan, the companies Informapro Srl, EuResist Network GEIE and ItalConsult s.a.s. I-PRO works at the health monitoring system, that uses the DHIS2 platform, together with the DHIS2 developers: the system uses an international open source platform used by more than 40 countries,and it makes possible to collect health data routinely and to encode them into a language internationally recognized, the KRG-DHIS is accessible from all PCs and Mobile Devices in Kurdistan (User Manual available for download). The project also includes training activities, addressed to local healthcare professionals and statisticians, focused on the implementation of the Health Information Systems, on the International classification of the diseases and on the Epidemiological Surveillance. In August 2017 the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development has deliberated to fund, toghether with the University of Rome Torvergata and the Kurdistan Health Ministry, for the next three years, the putting into effect of the health monitoring information system in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region. The KRG-DHIS system continues his path - the data collected up to now are over 270.000 health events. I-PRO participates to the repeated missions in Kurdistan (six missions already done). December 2020 - four new centers started to record diseases surveillance data in DOHOK governatorate (Malta, Bagera, Nazarki, Zawita), e one new center in Halabja governatorate (Wafa Hospital). These are the first centers opened since the pandemic started and it was possible thanks to collaboration and the efforts of our local staff.
July 2021 - From June to July 2021 IPRO has participated the DHIS2 Annual Cconference and has been involved in the first conference on the results of the KRG-HIS system, patronged by the Ministry of Health of the Kurdistan Region and partcipated by the represantiteves of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by the Head of the WHO mission in Iraq.
October 2021- In the Region of Iraqi Kurdistan, at the end of September, DGOHs of Slemani and Dohok have been visited by the local and italian project coordinators, in order to agree about the next steps: inlcusion in the system of 30 more units by the end of the year. Were held also meetings with the KRG Department od Information Technology (DIT) and with the Ministry of Agricolture and Water Resources, to define next developments.
December 2022 - The number of clinical events, outpatient visits, hospitalizations, births and deaths recorded in the KRG-HIS system exceeded two million three hundred thousand. The amount of data is able to describe the health conditions of the Region in recent years.

Washington D.C., 23-24 March 2017 - IPRO was present at the 2017 DHIS 2 SYMPOSIUM. The KRG-DHIS project, together with the project coordinator from University of Rome Tor Vergata. The community of the DHIS2 experts had a deeper view of the project's achievements and was involved in the possible future developments.

Oslo, Norway - Feb 2017 - DHIS2 international community, coordinated by the Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo selected as the User Story of the month our KRG-DHIS Pilot project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led by the University of Rome Tor Vergata in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of the Kurdistan Regional Government, and realized by I-PRO and EuResist Network.
DHIS 2 platform, used for the implementation of the KRG-DHIS Health Information System, is an open source software for reporting, analysis and dissemination of data for all health programs used by more than 40 countries. It is developed by the Health Information Systems Programme (HISP), coordinated by the Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo, and supported by NORAD, PEPFAR, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS and the University of Oslo. |
Erbil - Dohuk - Jan 2017 - a delegation of the technical management of the KRG-DHIS project has met the KRG Minister of Health and the Director of Health in Dohuk; three more centres have been included in the system, in Aqrah and in Dinarta and the pediatric Hospital in Dohuk. The KRG representatives call for a continuation of the Italian support to the project and show the enormous effort they are keeping also in the presence of the massive flow of refugees and displaced people.

Erbil, November 2016
New mission in the three governatorates of the Kurdish Region; New centres joined the project, up to 30 participating sites. Rural health centres were opened in the Zakho Region, in Erbil and Slemani. The event data collected are now more than 150.000. The project personnel give all the support to the Region in these difficult times and we receive gratitude and strong commitment in the project. |

The Pilot Phase of the Project is started. Two new centers are involved, also in the Directorate of Health HALABJA. A new mission is performed by the KRG-DHIS staff (17-22 September). Epidemiological surveillance system has now recorded more than 25000 Disease Events by Pilot Centers (statistics generation: 22 September). The DHIS2 Health Monitoring Information System implemented by I-PRO has involved in Kurdistan: n. 34 kurdish operating users - n. 12 health centers in Erbil, Duhok, Slemani. |
Kurdistan Region, April 2016
The KRG-DHIS staff performed a mission visiting the three provinces and all the centres participating in the test phase, checking the performances of the trained local medical doctors. The staff had a meeting with the Health Minister, and with the local directorates and the Italian Cooperation representatives. The Epidemiological surveillance system has already recorded almost 9000 diseases events ad 300 vaccinations. New centres are going to be activated in the test phase. |

I-PRO representatives are at the "DHIS 2 FOR INGO’S SYMPOSIUM 2016”, that is held on 22-23 February at the Kellogg Conference Hotel in Washington D.C. It is an opportunity for participants to learn about the development roadmap of the software, to meet the development team and to know use-cases that have adopted DHIS2 in creative ways to solve iNGO data management challenge. |
